"GTA 6": New trailer behind Netflix paywall
The hype machine is rolling: A gameplay preview of “Grand Theft Auto VI“ will premiere on Netflix on August 27th. YouTube will follow a few hours later.

“This series is: High-gloss, Gripping, Adventure, Fast-paced, Original, Cars, Action thriller and Film”. This is how Netflix describes a preview of "GTA 6" announced for August 27th, which will premiere on the streaming service at 9 PM German time.
The format, which is quite certainly not really a series, is called “Grand Theft Auto VI: An In-depth Look”. It is scheduled to appear on YouTube six hours after the Netflix premiere, with a time delay. Rockstar does not reveal what exactly will be shown in the video. Much indicates that the studio wants to show more extensive gameplay of “GTA 6” for the first time. So far, fans have only seen cinematic trailer shots, which are said to consist of a mixture of cutscenes and artfully twisted gameplay material.
Netflix instead of YouTube
Game trailers usually appear on YouTube or in the industry's live stream shows. The fact that Rockstar and Netflix are collaborating on the release of the next “GTA 6” video underscores the blockbuster claim of the upcoming action game. Here, the trailer is not simply thrown onto the net; it is becoming a major Netflix event like a boxing match or a football broadcast.

)It is not entirely far-fetched to assume that Netflix expects new subscribers from the cooperation: The first trailer in December 2023 achieved 90 million views on YouTube within 24 hours, setting the record for the most-watched video game reveal, according to Guinness World Records. The second trailer has been watched over 170 million times on Rockstar's own channel alone to date. Are there really people who would rather subscribe to Netflix than wait six hours for the preview video? It cannot be ruled out.
Premiere on Gamescom Thursday
August 27th is also the first public day of Gamescom. The trade fair runs from August 26th to 30th, and the halls in Cologne close at 8 PM on Thursdays. The Netflix premiere is therefore one hour after the trade fair closes. For other game companies, “GTA 6” is already an attention problem again. The competition gives the release period a wide berth. For example, Microsoft has postponed the role-playing game "Fable" to February 2027, explicitly citing the full calendar including “GTA 6”.

“GTA 6” will be released on November 19th for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, pre-orders have been possible since June 25th. A PC version has not yet been announced.
