Massive explosion destroys Blue Origin's heavy-lift rocket New Glenn
Jeff Bezos' spaceflight company Blue Origin intended to launch the heavy-lift rocket New Glenn for the fourth time. This will not happen after an explosion.

A apparently fully fueled rocket from Blue Origin was destroyed in a massive explosion at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Live footage from several media outlets showed this. The spaceflight company owned by Jeff Bezos has since admitted an “anomaly.” Bezos himself also commented, adding that all employees were accounted for and safe. He stated it was too early to provide details on the potential cause, but investigations were already underway. It was a “very hard day,” but they would rebuild and fly again: “It's worth it.”

According to Blue Origin, the explosion occurred during a test that involved igniting the engines before the planned next launch. The actual launch was scheduled for next week at the earliest, according to US media reports. Blue Origin stated that the New Glenn rocket was supposed to send 48 satellites for Amazon's Leo constellation into orbit. The destruction of the rocket is now not only a severe setback for this, but with the New Glenn, Blue Origin also aims to compete with Elon Musk's SpaceX. The spaceflight company has dominated commercial spaceflight for years. Musk himself expressed regret over the incident on his microblogging service X and wished Blue Origin a speedy recovery.
NASA also investigating
The New Glenn has been under development for over ten years and can carry approximately 45 tons of payload into space. It is named after the US astronaut John Glenn. It had its first successful launch in January 2025, followed by two more. The explosion occurred now when Blue Origin actually wanted to start significantly increasing the launch frequency to finally bring more satellites into orbit for Leo. However, other rockets are to be used for this, and the now-exploded New Glenn was supposed to transport 48 satellites. It is still unclear whether the explosion will also delay the other launches.

Following the destruction of the rocket, NASA chief Jared Isaacman also commented; the US space agency cooperates with Blue Origin on its moon program. He stated on X that they were aware of the “anomaly” that occurred at launch complex 35 on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station: “Spaceflight is unforgiving, and developing new heavy-lift launch capability is extraordinarily difficult,” it further stated. They will work with partners to investigate, assess short-term impacts, and then launch rockets again. Information on any effects on the Artemis and the Moon program will be made public as soon as it is available.
