The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to switch from Microsoft Office to an open-source alternative, but needs time for it. The replacement of Microsoft Office is “fundamentally part of the state's strategic direction towards greater digital sovereignty,” a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Finance and Digitalization said in response to an inquiry from c't. However, due to the close interlinking with numerous specialist applications, the conversion is not feasible in the short term and will take place over a longer period.
A final decision for a specific Microsoft alternative has not yet been made in Schwerin. In the course of introducing Nextcloud, they are currently also piloting Nextcloud Office based on Collabora Office, said the spokeswoman. In addition, they are examining the use of LibreOffice as a desktop office solution in parallel.

The state government had recently already announced the switch from Microsoft SharePoint to Nextcloud. The 5,000 employees of the state administration who previously used SharePoint have already been migrated, the ministry has now clarified in response to a follow-up question from c't. In the medium term, around 50,000 employees, from ministries to municipal facilities, are to work with Nextcloud.
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is also relying on the open-source project management solution OpenProject and a “locally controlled” AI assistant based on Open WebUI.
