With Apple’s first foldable, users will have to accept some compromises due to the design. But wireless charging shouldn’t be one of them. According to the usually well-informed Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple has succeeded in integrating wireless magnetic charging via MagSafe into the “iPhone Ultra,” whose introduction is expected next week. In a podcast, the reporter said that all indications he has heard suggest that Apple is also building MagSafe into its foldable phone. “They managed it with the iPhone Air, so I don’t see why it shouldn’t work with the foldable.”
MagSafe role model iPhone Air
The iPhone Air was released last fall and was Apple’s thinnest phone to date. The iPhone Ultra, as the rumor mill calls Apple’s first foldable, is unlikely to be much thicker when unfolded. Integrating MagSafe requires space for the induction coil and integrated magnets so that the charger and/or charging puck can hold.

There was enough space for this in the Air, with Apple placing important parts of the main logic board in the so-called camera platform. Apple sells a suitable battery pack specifically for the iPhone Air. This contains cells of the same capacity as the device itself, but there are charging losses, which allows for a 65 percent runtime extension.
Specs of the iPhone Ultra
In his podcast appearance on Tom’s Guide, Gurman reiterated his assessment that the Ultra will start at over $2000 (before sales tax). The outer display of the passport-shaped phone measures 5.5 inches and 7.8 inches when unfolded. Apple will use a new modem chip (C2) and the latest processor (A20 Pro). Apps will automatically adapt to the respective display size. The hinge is “very durable” and leaves only a small “crease,” but it is not entirely invisible.
It is still unclear where Apple will integrate the MagSafe charging capability. However, it is likely that it can be accessed when the device is closed, meaning the foldable will be charged inductively similarly to regular iPhones. Otherwise, buyers will have to make compromises on the camera (main camera with only two sensors) and biometrics; the latter is expected to be implemented for the first time on an iPhone via Touch ID in the Sleep/Wake button, as is known from iPads like the iPad mini.
