iPhone Duo: Overview of the variants
On Friday, you can pre-order the iPhone Duo, and a week later, delivery begins. Which version makes sense?

Not long now, and buyers with enough cash will be able to pre-order the iPhone Duo. But which model should it be? At first glance, the choice is simple, but interested parties should take a closer look. Our background piece on Apple’s new device category, in which the Duo is also compared with other foldables, can help with the decision.
Pre-orders and availability
Apple will accept pre-orders starting Friday, October 16, at 5 a.m. Pacific Time. For Central European Summer Time, which is still in effect until October 25, that’s 2 p.m. Customers in more than 63 countries, including Germany, can then order. Delivery will take place a week later, on October 23. Sometimes, the hardware may arrive a day earlier.
Strong demand is expected – despite the steep prices (see below). Apple is said to be having comparatively small quantities produced. Apparently, the yield, i.e., the production yield, is comparatively meager, as Apple enforces high quality standards. However, it should be enough for the first sales batch. Nevertheless, it is to be expected that the devices will be sold out as early as Friday afternoon. This applies in particular to the entry-level version with 256 GByte. But larger variants are also likely to be in demand.
You can find the pre-order page here. If you don’t make it to pre-order, a visit to an Apple Store on the day of sale might help. However, long queues are possible here – and it is unclear how many devices will be available to “just grab” on the spot. Those who want to try out the hardware beforehand can also do so in the Apple Retail Stores. However, a purchase without pre-order on October 16 could lead to delayed deliveries towards December.

Colors and prices
The iPhone Duo will be available in a total of eight variants – four per color version. The available colors are “Starlight”, a slightly darker shade of white, and “Midnight”, a dark navy. As usual, Apple is staggering the device price according to storage capacity: 2299 euros for 256 GByte, 2549 euros for 512 GByte, 3049 euros for 1 TByte, and 3799 euros for 2 TByte.
The choice of color is a matter of taste. However, it is to be expected that the Midnight variant will sell better than Starlight as a “special color”. For storage, you should orient yourself to your needs, for example, based on a previous iPhone you own and want to switch from.
Storage and accessories
256 GByte is almost too little these days, especially if you take a lot of photos and videos and have a lot of offline data (e.g., Netflix) – unless you store a lot in the cloud. The 512-GByte model therefore seems to be the better choice, even if the price is likely to break many pain thresholds. The 1-TByte model is suitable for people who really need the storage. The 2-TByte model, with its price tag approaching 4000 euros, seems like complete overkill for most users. The iPhone Duo package doesn’t contain much: only the smartphone itself and a USB-C charging cable.
You should already have the power adapter or have to buy it separately. Official cases are also available from Apple: a folio with a stand for a mere 149 euros (color-matched in two colors) and a “Duo Case”, which offers better protection for the device, but costs only 89 euros. Many other providers are likely to deliver or at least present accessories in the coming weeks.
