iOS 27, macOS 27 & Co.: Developers can install betas
After WWDC keynote, Apple started the beta test of the new operating systems – as usual, initially for developers. Those who want to test Siri AI need patience.

At the start of its WWDC developer conference on Monday evening, Apple, as usual, released the pre-versions of the new operating systems for developers to download. The first public previews (public beta) will, as usual, not be available until July. Available for devs are betas of all major systems, i.e., iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 aka Golden Gate, VisionOS 27, watchOS 27, and tvOS 27. Pre-versions of HomePod OS 27 and AirPods firmware are likely to follow.
Waiting for Siri AI
However, anyone hoping to test Apple's revamped Siri, also known as Siri AI, will be disappointed. As expected, Apple has only provided a waiting list here. This applies to all devices, with no distinction made between Mac, iPhone, or iPad. The “Waiting List” can be found in the Siri menu of the system settings, where Apple has now omitted the umbrella term Apple Intelligence. Instead, Siri is described as “Powered by Apple Intelligence.” It is unclear how long it will take for users to be activated for Siri AI. Apple has not provided any timeframes for this.
Anyone with an Apple account whose address points to an EU country will only see the waiting list on the Mac; iOS and iPadOS are not considered. Apple justifies this with an ongoing conflict with the European Union over the interpretation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which the company fears could have negative implications for user privacy. The EU Commission wants Apple to allow third-party AI models at the system level, but Apple only wants to implement this via an intermediate layer (“Trusted OS Agent”). However, there has been no agreement on this so far.

Image generator and new photo effects
What does work, on the other hand, is Apple's new version of the image generator Image Playground. This is available even without Siri AI and delivers relatively respectable images, although they don't always look photorealistic as Apple had actually promised. For some users, Image Playground is currently failing completely. Apple seems to be relying on a combination of local AI and cloud services. New is a Dynamic Island display module that shows when an image generation has been completed.
The new photo functions with improved image cleanup, image expansion, and “Spatial Reframing” also work without Siri AI. With the latter function, you can change the perspective of a shot, which also worked with an illustration from Image Playground. As usual, you should only install the new betas on devices that are not in productive use; there are still all sorts of bugs. It also makes sense to wait for the public beta, which is usually already more stable.
