Muse Image: Meta's AI image generator can modify images from Instagram accounts
Meta's Superintelligence team has developed an AI image generator called Muse Image, which has access to Instagram content, among other things.

Meta has released the first AI image generator from the new Superintelligence Labs division, Muse Image, which can also process complex tasks. The tool is intended to be available independently depending on the country, as well as in Instagram or WhatsApp. The technology will come to Facebook later. The new AI model “processes images precisely, composes from multiple references, and draws on Instagram for social context”, explains Meta. To achieve this, the tool is supposed to work agentically, i.e., use search and coding tools, independently improve the generated content, and optimize the computing power used. You can try it out on meta.ai, among other places.
Access to Instagram content
The new image generator is closely integrated with Meta's ecosystem. This allows users to generate images featuring friends or “reimagine their Instagram photos”. Content from public profiles can be automatically used for image generation. Those who do not want this must explicitly object. “Muse Image is your creative partner that knows your world, making it easy to turn your ideas into high-quality visuals that you can download and share anywhere – including directly to your feed, your story, or your chat”, writes Meta. Meta does not specify where exactly the image generator is available at launch, but the technology is intended to be made usable in more and more countries.
According to the explanations, Muse Image has access to coding tools to generate diagrams or QR codes, among other things. These can be used as a basis to improve the accuracy of the generated content. Furthermore, “create animated GIFs, websites with embedded images, and interactive visual games” can be created. The AI tool can also search the internet to gather real-time information. In addition, it can continuously improve its output. This self-optimization was not intentionally developed; instead, it emerged during training.

The new image generator comes from Meta's Superintelligence team, which was launched a year ago. This team is intended to work towards the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), i.e., an AI that exhibits general intelligence and can compete with humans in this regard. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally took care of setting up the team. To this end, he also poached top AI experts from competitors, among others. Meta has the advantage of being able to cross-subsidize the expensive AI business. The money comes from the booming advertising revenue of its social networks. Muse Image is now intended for these networks, and no connection to the development of superintelligence can be seen.
