Report: MacBook Pro and iMac with M6 by October
Apple is preparing its next chip. It is expected to be used in two Mac models for the first time but will likely remain an interim step.

Apple is apparently on the verge of releasing new Macs – the first machines with M6 processors. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, by October, in addition to a new 14-inch entry-level MacBook Pro model with an M6 chip that has already been rumored, there will likely be a new iMac M6 as well.
Improvements primarily in internal components
Apple apparently plans only a standard variant of the M6 processor generation, but no Pro, Max, or even Ultra models. Instead, these are expected to follow with the M7 next year, which promises significant acceleration in AI applications and support for up to 1.5 terabytes of main memory. Nevertheless, the M6 models are likely to offer some speed advantages, writes Gurman, especially for the iMac, which is currently still running with an M4 processor. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is currently on M5 status.

According to current information, the form factor and other hardware are unlikely to change much, if at all. This applies, according to Gurman, to both the MacBook Pro 14 and the iMac. The all-in-one desktop computer will accordingly retain its 24-inch display based on LCD technology. Apple is reportedly planning to use an OLED-based screen in the iMac for the first time in the future; however, this is likely still years away. Fans of the device continue to hope that Apple will one day bring back a 27-inch variant (as was once the case with Intel iMacs), but this is also still waiting to happen.
Which Macs are likely to arrive in October
In addition to the two M6 Macs, iMac and MacBook Pro with 14 inches, observers expect a completely new Apple notebook series in the fall: the MacBook Ultra. This is said to be a computer with a thinner case, an OLED screen (for the first time in a Mac), and a touchscreen. It is reportedly equipped with an older chip, as the M6 is only available as a standard variant: M5 Pro and M5 Max, which were already used in the MacBook Pro from last spring. Apple apparently plans variants with 14 and 16 inches.
It is still unclear how Apple will handle the Mac mini. It is still on the M4 status, as it always uses a standard chip and a Pro chip, the M6 would be unsuitable. It is conceivable that Apple will also stick with M5 and M5 Pro here for the time being. When a new Mac mini will be released is unclear – possibly not before next year. Gurman does not mention it in his report. Mac mini M4 and M4 Pro were released in the fall of 2024.
