With record low turnout, French voters expressed their disillusionment with the country's politics and with their president this weekend. In regional elections, Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative party had a record poor showing. The president now faces a debacle in a second round of voting next Sunday.

Socialist Party boss Martine Aubry had reason to be pleased -- the success of her party also helped to cement her position as its leader. She can now hope to secure the slot as her party's presidential candidate in the next campaign in 2012, putting her head-to-head against Sarkozy.
