Photo Gallery A Protest against the 'Jewish List'

A politician with the far-right Jobbik party in Hungary has demanded the registration of Jews living in the country, saying that they could be a security risk. Many are outraged by his comments, but they are not uncommon for Hungarian extremists.

During a debate over Israel's military offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, right-wing parliamentarian Márton Gyöngyösi demanded that "all Jews living in Hungary be registered" and that "Jews, particularly those in parliament and the government, be evaluated for the potential danger they pose to Hungary."

His comments generated immediate indigantion and disgust from politicians, civil rights activists and Jewish organizations in the country. A spontaneous demonstration took place on Tuesday, including some who put on Jewish stars.

Holocaust survivors also took part in the demonstration on Tuesday. The situation was made worse by the weak response to Gyöngyösi's comments by the governing Fidesz party.
