Photo Gallery Another Night, Another Mattress
When Christine Neder, 25, moved from Munich to Berlin, she didn't want to bother with the hassle of searching for a room. Instead, she decided to scour social networks for people willing to put her up for a night at a time. She's now conducting a 90-day experiment in couch surfing.
Christine carries her pillow, sheets and sleeping bag with her. But she's always much happier when her host pulls out a mattress. "That's always better than a sofa!" she says.
One evening she ended up staying with a hippy named Jonny. Christine could only watch helplessly as Hansi the pet zebra finch drew his last breaths.
Hansi cowered on the floor of his cage as Neder and host Jonny sipped organic wine.
Christine almost gave up on her experiment on the second day after an evening of heavy drinking left her physically exhausted.
Christine had been expecting disgusting student apartments, but it seems there are also luxury CouchSurfers. One night she stayed in her dream flat with a stylish designer bath ...
... huge terrace with rattan furniture ...
... fluffy cats and ...
... original sketches on the wall from animated films by Walt Disney.
You can tell a creative apartment by the look of the bathroom door, she says.
Having a new bed every evening also means a new bathroom every morning.
One host offered Christine more reading material than she could manage in a night.
Christine spent one evening with a fashion blogger, who had hung naked photos on her bedroom wall.
