The football club Athletic Bilbao is one of the oldest in Spain's Primera Division league. It is also the pride of the Basque people.
Throughout its history, the team has recruited exclusively people who are either Basque themselves or who have cut their teeth playing with Basque teams.
The "sacred ground" for the team is the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao. Internationally, the city is most famous for its Guggenheim Museum, a Frank Gehry-designed, titanium-clad colossus covered with silver scales on the southern bank of the Nervión River.
The club is going to great lengths to hold on to its proud traditions. The globalization of soccer and the ability to form teams with star players from around the world make this tradition harder to keep while winning, but the team is still hanging on.
