Photo Gallery Berlin by Night
While most Berliners were sleeping, Berlin photographer Dieter Grube was wandering through the city taking photos.
The result is a new book called "Berlin by Night" with 76 photos and excerpts from books by writers such as Christopher Isherwood and Heinrich Heine in which they describe the Berlin night.
Wide open spaces, lonely shadows, darkened court yards -- all of it finds a place in Grube's collection.
The book reveals a new side of Berlin, but also augments what most Berliners already know: the city may not be beautiful, but it's attractive nonetheless.
All of Grube's pictures were taken on slide film. And he used whatever light was available. None of them have been digitally manipulated.
Grube's Berlin is a capital city without people.
The photographer seems to embrace the melancholy of the city, focusing on the empty and the run-down.
There is only one human face in the whole book -- on a sign advertising a Chinese restaurant near Zoo Station.
