Photo Gallery Celebrating Astrid Lindgren
Nov. 14 would have been the 100th birthday of Astrid Lindgren, the Swedish children's book author and creator of beloved character Pippi Longstocking. Here, schoolchildren in Sweden participate in a ceremony celebrating the occasion.
Best known for her book "Pippi Longstocking" -- portrayed here by actress Inger Nilsson in the 1968 television series -- Astrid Lindgren's books have sold more than 145 million copies around the world.
Germany is releasing a special postage stamp to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Lindgren's birth. German postal officials unveiled this special stamp on Monday in Berlin.
Pippi Longstocking lives on in the form of theatrical productions across the world, as well as in several film adaptations.
In the author's hometown of Vimmerby, Sweden, a glass sculpture called "Astrid Lindgren's World" has been installed to commemorate her life. The sculpture is the work of Swedish glass artist Göran Wärff.
Lindgren died in 2002 at the age of 94. On Wednesday, children in Vimmerby laid flowers on her grave.
