A pilot project by Daimler starting in the German city of Ulm on Friday will make small, fuel-efficient Smart cars available for rent wherever they happen to be parked around the city.
Daimler will devote 50 of its tiny Smart cars to the project, which starts this Friday. For the test phase, only Daimler employees will join the scheme.
A device near the windshield will read a specially coded driver's license.
The cars can be picked up and released anywhere around Ulm. The general idea is to make sure a rentable car is always, roughly, within walking distance.
Keys are found in the glove compartment...
... and each customer has a PIN code.
Except for a few fixed parking spaces in central parts of Ulm, customers will have to find the cars on the Internet.
If the pilot project is a success, Daimler will open the scheme to the public in 2009.
