Photo Gallery Debating Hitler's Birthplace
The tiny town of Braunau am Inn has a big question to answer: What to do with the house where Adolf Hitler was born? The mayor kicked off a debate last week by saying it should be turned into residential apartments.
The mayor's comments, however, unleashed a storm of protest from those both in Austria and abroad who want the property to be turned into a memorial site. The structure, which used to house a facility for the handicapped, has been empty for a year.
The house is currently marked with a memorial plaque outside. "For peace, freedom and democracy. Never again fascism. In remembrance of millions of dead." The building is privately owned and tourists have no access.
The building was a boarding house when Hitler was born there on April 20, 1889. His family didn't stay in Braunau long, moving to nearby Passau in 1892.
