A series of recent German train strikes escalated on Thursday when conductors for Deutsche Bahn, the German rail operator, interrupted passenger service in addition to halting freight routes. Commuters packed a platform this morning at a station in Munich.
Would-be passengers in Stuttgart examined a train schedule, pocked by blacked-out listings for trains that will not run during the strike. Millions of commuters and travellers were impacted Thursday by the strike.
Locomotives piled up Wednesday in a railyard near Hamburg.
Conductors picketed Wednesday in a train yard near Cologne. The GDL, the Union representing Deutsche Bahn drivers, has been striking for weeks in an effort to secure a significant pay raise.
Karl-Friedrich Rausch, head of the Bahn's board of directors, spoke to reporters Thursday in Berlin. "We sit at the bargaining table and wait," said Rausch.
"Train cancelled" was a common warning at train stations across Germany. The strike is scheduled to last 62-hours, into Saturday.
