In the past, the company has often used the Norwegian flag and other Nordic symbols in its clothing, drawing criticism from the country's officials. "We consider it regrettable that Thor Steinar uses Norwegian place names in order to associate Norway as such with Thor Steinar and the extreme right-wing scene," Anne-Kirsti Wendel Karlsen of the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin told the Freie Presse newspaper.
Thor Steinar clothing is often seen worn by neo-Nazis and members of the right-wing scene. A local politician in Chemnitz described the opening of the Brevik store as "scandalous". It's the second time the company has opened a store with that name. Previously, Thor Steinar opened a Brevik store in Hamburg in 2008, long before the shootings by the similarly named Norwegian man. The store only remained open for a month.
Here, Chemnitz residents can be seen in an anti-Nazi rally in the city on Monday. The city's mayor said the demonstration was aimed at sending a "message of a peaceful, cosmopolitan, diverse and tolerant Chemnitz in which there is no place for Nazis."
