Shukri al-Assouli was among the survivors of an incident that saw 500 refugees killed after the ship carrying them was deliberately rammed by smugglers earlier this month. It is believed that Assouli lost his wife and their two children.

Mohamed Raad, 25 (left), and Abdelmazid Alhila, 24, also survived the disaster. Alhila claims that four ships passed by the site of the sunken ship and none offered any help. "They just left us to die," Alhila says.

Most of the victims of the latest tragedy were Palestinians. On Saturday, Palestinians threw roses in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Gaza City to mourn the loss of the victims of the ship's sinking.
