Moammar Gadhafi reacted with fury after his son Hannibal was recently arrested in Switzerland. The incident led to a diplomatic ice age between Libya and Switzerland.
Of Moammar Gadhafi's eight children, his second eldest, Saif al-Islam, is considered his likely successor. The 36-year-old is regarded as a pro-Western reformer and advocate of more democracy.
His eldest son, Mohammed Gadhafi, is from his first marriage. He obtained a Ph.D in enginnering and management from the UK's Liverpool University in 2006. Since then he has taken control of Libya's telecommunications industry.
The third son, 35-year-old Saadi, is hugely interested in football. He even played in the Italian premier league for Perugia although he was suspended after failing a doping test. He is still a big investor in European soccer clubs.
It is 32-year-old Hannibal who has caused his father the most headaches. He was involved in brawls while in school, once drove his car down the Champs Elysees at high speed and beat up his pregnant girlfriend.
It was his arrest on July 15 in Geneva that sparked a diplomatic row between Libya and Switzerland. He and his wife were accused of beating two of their servants.
