Photo Gallery Hardline Hungary
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is not a politician to avoid confrontation, at least when it comes to the European Union. He has angered many leaders in Western Europe with his hardline stance against asylum-seekers pouring into his country along the Western Balkan route.
On Monday, Hungary completed construction of a 175-kilometer, razor wire fence along the border it shares with Serbia. Orbán has said his country is acting in an exemplary manner with the anti-refugee fence and that criticism from abroad is "dishonest."
Many across, Europe, however, feel that Hungary is showing its ugly side through its poor treatment of refugees. The camp set up for incoming refugees in Röszke on the Serbian border looks no better than an improvised jail.
Tents lack rain protection and there is a shortage of food, medicine and portable toilets.
The move by Germany and Austria to implement border controls this week means that Hungary could be the last stop for many refugees trying to make their way to Western Europe. Orbán has said he will only allow refugees to leave Hungary and make their way north if they have permission from the German or Austrian governments.
