Helicopers landing on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson as part of the mission to provide emergency aid to Haiti after last week's devastating earthquake. The floating military base is the core of the largest humanitarian mission the US military has ever undertaken. This photo, as well as all others in this gallery, are either handout images from the US Navy or approved for release by the US Navy.
The Vinson is an enormous ship, over 1,000 feet long with a displacement of over 95,000 tons. Here, the ship cruises off the coast of Haiti during its mission to provide assistance to the country following last Tuesday's magnitude 7.0 earthquake.
Helicopters carrying supplies for Port-au-Prince and more rural areas take off from the deck of the Vinson all day long. The supplies are flown in from the base at Guantanamo in Cuba, a two-hour flight away.
The US has sent a number of ships to help in the relief effort, including the USS Comfort, a hospital ship with 1,200 beds on board.
