Frenchman Guillaume Néry competes in the Constant Weight Apnea discipline of free diving.
To handle the extreme conditions without oxygen tanks and the aid of only weight and flippers, Néry undergoes intensive training. Here he practices special breathing techniques.
He also practices holding his breath in swimming pools.
Néry set a world record in his discipline in 2008. Here he is seen with actor Ted Danson at a World Ocean Day event in May 2011. Danson is active in the fight to protect the world's oceans.
In the Constant Weight discipline, divers must bring back to the surface the aid they take on their dive -- weight and flippers.
The 29-year-old has set four world records. At 22 he became the youngest diver to ever do so in his discipline.
During a world-record attempt at Nice in 2006, Néry hoped to reach a depth of 109 meters, but he lost consciousness just a few meters below the surface on his way back. Safety divers saved his life. This photo shows him preparing for the attempt.
