Photo Gallery Mourning Jörg Haider
Jörg Haider never shied away from a political battle and his right-wing populism was often criticized. Still, tens of thousands showed up for his funeral on Saturday.
The funeral in Klagenfurt lasted the entire day with much of Austria's political elite showing up.
There was hardly a word said about Haider's complicated political legacy, despite his having sent mixed messages about the Nazis.
Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer gave a speech during the ceremony for Haider.
Haider was immensely popular in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia, which he headed for a dozen years. His anti-EU posturing proved popular.
For days prior to his memorial, thousands filed past the seat of Carinthian government in Klagenfurt to pay their respects to the deceased politician.
Haider died in a late night car accident last Saturday. He was driving twice the speed limit and his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.
Some in Austria criticized that few in Austria have been willing to say a critical word about the politician since his death.
A number of foreign guests also made their way to Austria for the funeral, including Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son of the Libyan leader.
At the time of his death, Haider headed up the Alliance for the Future of Austria, a far-right populist party. He will be succeeded by his close friend Stefan Petzner.
Haider's career on the national stage was up and down. At home in Carinthia, though, he remained popular.
