It sounds like a fisherman's tale: Hikers on the coast of Sweden near Norway came across a three-meter-long giant oarfish. The specimen, it turns out, was rather small for its species.

Oarfish can grow to be up to 12 meters (39 feet) long and can weigh up to 300 kilograms (660 pounds). Many think they might be the origin of sea serpent legends of old.

Very little is known about the oarfish and they have very rarely been filmed alive. It is thought that they only come to the surface when they are dying.
