Passengers wait Thursday morning at a Lufthansa check-in counter in Düsseldorf, one of the airports affected by an employee union strike. Passengers were asked to check the status of their flights online.
The union, Ver.di, which represents some 33,000 Lufthansa employees, called for the warning strike in advance of labor negotiations to be held with the airline Friday. The union wants a wage increase of 5.2 percent and more job security. The airline is calling for a pay freeze and longer working hours.

Cancellations were expected to end by noon, Thursday, and affected flights only within Germany and Europe. Intercontinental flights on Lufthansa were proceeding as scheduled.
