Photo Gallery Remembering Rukeli Trollmann

Rukeli Trollmann was one of the top boxers in Germany in the early 1930s. But as a Sinti, he was hounded out of the sport by the Nazis before eventually being murdered at a concentration camp.

The temporary memorial is in Viktoria Park, just a stone's throw from where Trollmann won his title fight on June 9, 1933. The boxing federation stripped him of his title a few weeks later. In 2003 he finally had his title restored and his family was presented with the title belt.

Artist Alekos Hofstetter, one of the artists of Bewegnung Nurr, stands in the center of the memorial. He says they wanted it to be a place for people to meet and communicate. The sculpture is called 9841, Trollmann's prisoner number.
