It is hardly a logical spot for a farm, but three Berliners have earmarked a massive former factory roof for an unusual urban agriculture venture. The sustainable set-up will produce both vegetables and fish for local residents and could be a model for future city farms as the world continues to urbanize.

This double-decker greenhouse is a proto-type for the roof farm which will cultivate both fish and vegetables. The lower level of the so-called container farm is home to fish. Excretions from the fish, especially from their gills, are used to fertilize the water, which is pumped to the plants growing above. The plants, meanwhile, purify the water for the fish.

The success of their mini-garden has inspired the Fresh from the Roof team to turn this flat roof into an urban field. In total their farm will cover 7,000 square meters, the size of a football pitch.

These massive vats were formerly used to dry barley in the malt factory. By 2013 they will contain schools of fish. Fresh from the Roof expect to provide tonnes of fish and vegetables every month.
