The Serbian comedy "Parada," about a couple that want to organize a gay pride parade in Belgrade, was a surprise hit in the Balkans. SPIEGEL ONLINE spoke to director Srdjan Dragojevic about the challenges involved in making a film about gays for a largely homophobic audience. This scene from the film shows Radmilo (right) who wants to organize the parade. He gets support from an unlikely quarter: the war veteran Limun (left).
In the film, Limun decides to stop hating gays out of love for his wife, and provides security for the gay pride parade.
In real life, over 200 people were injured at the 2010 gay pride parade in the Serbian capital Belgrade.
Anti-gay protests were held in the run-up to the 2010 parade.
Some 5,600 police officers were deployed at the 2010 parade, but they were unable to prevent the violence by right-wing extremists.
