Most people travel to the mountains for a bit of skiing. Soon, residents of Copenhagen will have the option of heading to the local incineration plant. The roof of a new waste-to-energy plant will be slanted to enable a bit of winter recreation.

Copenhagen is soon going to have yet another architectural jewel: an incineration plant masquerading as a ski slope. Planned by the architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group, their design for a new waste-to-energy plant was chosen at the end of January.

In addition to offering state-of-the art energy generation, the plant's roof will also double as a ski slope -- in an area of the Danish capital which has been entirely industrial until now.

When finished, the roof will offer skiers a choice of three runs, one of them even advertised as a difficult "black" route -- one of the only such runs in the country.

"The city has the weather for winter sports," Ingels told SPIEGEL recently. "We just don't have the landscape for it."

In addition to the ski slope, the building includes a second gimmick as well. For every ton of CO2 the factory emits, it will also puff a ring of steam out of the smoke stack, as seen in this image.
