Photo Gallery Stromboli Erupts
The island of Stromboli is located just off the coast of Sicily. The lava is flowing down an uninhabited slope of the mountain.
The lava flows put on a dramatic show all through Wednesday night.
The peak of Stromboli during the eruption on Wednesday. During the summer, thousands of tourists climb the volcano to take a look into its crater.
Despite the lava streaming down the mountain's slopes, there is little danger to the local population, authorities say.
Alarm sirens were set off, but there is little chance that there will be a repeat of 2002, when a huge chunk of rock was hurled into the sea, resulting in a huge wave which destroyed houses close to shore.
So far, there has been no evacuation ordered of Stromboli.
Scientists placed the volcano under heightened surveillance recently following higher seismic readings.
