"For years now, I've gotten updates on my mobile phone about the water level in Venice," says Duncan Zuur of The Netherlands. "Four times I traveled here in vain. Every time the water was just a few centimeters too shallow to wakeboard through St. Mark's Square and the side canals."

"This time it finally worked. On the night (before Dec. 2), it was clear that the water level would climb above 1.4 meters (4.6 feet). By 10 a.m., we were there."

"Everything had to be done quickly because, of course, this kind of fun is forbidden. We hooked up a motor winch as a friend waded through a flooded St. Mark's place in waders."

"Then he handed me a rope in a small side canal. The waves were perfect. No tourists as far as the eye could see. In the distance I could see policemen advancing, but it was too late for them to catch us."
