Photo Gallery Surreal Worlds
Julietta Scharf is curator for the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection of surrealist art, now on display in the Stüler building in Berlin, which once held the city's Egyptian Museum.
The series of paintings, photographs, and films was collected mainly by Julietta Scharf's father, Dieter. This photo is Man Ray's "Erotique voilee," 1933.
Scharf says her father had "a very broad view of what counted as surrealism: from Goya in the 17th century to the Art Brut movement after the war." This painting of "Sappho's Death" by Gustave Moreau, 1872, is one of the oldest works.
Paul Klee painted a whimsical chess board in "Freundliches Spiel," 1933.
Untitled, by Wolfgang Paalen, 1937.
"La poupée," by Hans Bellmer.
"The Authoritarian," left, and "Ease," both by Max Ernst.
"Le triomphe de l'amour" by Max Ernst. The new exhibition, called "Surreal Worlds," started this week and is open-ended.
