An Afghan policeman keeps watch in front of the Kandahar prison that was attacked by Taliban forces last friday.
The daring raid freed over 1,000 prisoners, including some 400 Taliban fighters and low-level officers.
Experts suspect that the Taliban raiders were pre-positioned outside the prison for days and used cell phones to plan and carry out the operation with the inmates inside.
The raid began with a truck bomb destroying the prison's main gate. Raiders then stormed into the prison yard on motorcycles and shot the guards. Eyewitnesses say prisoners were hurried away in minibuses.
The raid leaves experts and military officials of ISAF, the International Security Asssistance Force that includes this Canadian soldier, worrying about the Taliban's growing strength and the trustworthiness of Afghan military and police forces. Additional worry focuses on a Taliban emboldened by its recent successes.
