Pia Marie Witt has hand-reared and trained the paddling of ducks she is taking with her on the 485-kilometer swim to Bremerhaven on the North Sea.
Witt (left) and Wilfried Arnold got the idea of swimming up the Fulda and Weser rivers to Bremerhaven after a swan swam along wtih them in the river. "That was a really moving experience," Witt recalls.
It will take humans and animals six weeks to swim the 458 kilometers (almost 300 miles) to their final destination.
Even though the Indian Runners seem to like the water, they won't have to do all the swimming themselves. Witt and Arnold bought an inflatable dinghy that the ducks will spend a good deal of the trip riding in.
Witt decided the Indian Runner ducks would be best suited for their project because she liked the way they looked and "because they can be easily kept in our yard after the trip."
