Yemeni journalist and human rights activist Tawakkul Karman is one of three women to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year. In an interview with SPIEGEL, she said she envisions a Yemen with a government similar to the one in Turkey.
Leymah Gbowee, a peace activist from Liberia, was also honored by the Nobel Committee last week. Here, she is seen addressing a conference at Columbia University in New York last Friday.
Gbowee's activism helped bring about an end to the Liberian civil war, leading to the election of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Sirleaf was the third woman to be honored this year with the Nobel Peace Prize.
Karman says that it won't be long before Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh is forced out of office. Saleh said on Saturday that he would step down within days, but opposition activists are skeptical.
Demonstrations in Yemen against Saleh have been massive, like this one last Friday. But many are concerned that without his iron-fisted leadership, al-Qaida could flourish in the country.
