He didn't become prime minister, but Labour Party boss Jeremy Corbyn emerged as the surprise political victor in Britain's election on Thursday. He is seen here leaving his home.
The surprise victor gets a hug as he arrives at Labour Party headquarters in London. Corbyn succeeded in robbing the Tories of their absolute majority in parliament in a election result that humiliated Prime Minister Theresa May.
After his strong showing, Corbyn called on May to step down in order to clear the way for a Labour-led government "truly representative of all of the people of this country."
Corbyn scored big among young voters with his sociability, but also his leftist platforms like the renationalization of Britain's railways and the elimination of university tuition.
What made his success even more astounding is that support for Corbyn is weak within his own party. Tony Blair shifted the once left-wing party to the right and a large share are still in that camp. Many within Labour view Corbyn as being too far to the left with his socialist ideas.
Despite his standing in the party, Corbyn managed to lead Labour to its best election result since 2005.
Corbyn ran a campaign close to the people, traveling all across the country. Even his home in London's Islington district looks modest.
