Great Britain is planning the largest tidal power station in the world. Though the climate-friendly energy source is expected to provide five percent of the country's power, environementalists are opposing the project, which they say will destroy precious wildlife habitat.
The 16-kilometer barrier would span the inlet between southern England and South Wales and would be the world's largest tidal power station.
This beach in the Severn Estuary is the planned site for the barrage. The British government is currently conducting a multi-million pound feasibility study.

During the ebb, tidal water would flow through the barrage, powering hundreds of turbines that would in turn generate electricity. The British government estimates that the tidal power station could supply up to 5 percent of the country's current electricity needs. But it would also spell the end of a popular local sport: Surfing the waves of the Severn Bore.
