Astrid Lindgren is seen here in 1969 with actress Inger Nilsson on the set of the "Pippi Longstocking" film.
When it was first published, "Pippi Longstocking" turned the established order upside-down. For one, its heroine is stronger and many times smarter than any adult. For another, the anarchy in the book triumphs over middle-class decency.
Today, children all over the world are familiar with Astrid Lindgrens books and with the films -- including "Emil i Lönneberga" (shown here) -- TV series or plays based on her works. Her characters live on in the childhood memories of the baby boomer generation.
A still from the 1975 movie of "Karlsson-on-the-Roof."
Born November 14, 1907, in the southeastern Swedish town of Vimmerby, Astrid Lindgren revolutionized the world of children's books.
