Veteran German actor Ulrich Mühe has died. He admitted to having stomach cancer in an interview published last Sunday. He died just as the interview appeared -- though his death wasn't announced until Wednesday.
As a straitlaced Stasi officer, Mühe became the public face of last year's Oscar-winning Cold War drama, "The Lives of Others."
He also had a starring role in the Nazi satire "My Führer: The Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler."
The film, directed by Dani Levy, broke German taboos about "Hitler humor," but flopped in 2007.
Mühe (left) also played Harry Geduldig in a 2002 TV movie called "Goebbels und Geduldig," about a man who disguises himself as Josef Goebbels.
He was on hand to accept a Bavarian Film Prize for "The Lives of Others" in 2006 ...
... and won a 2006 German Film Prize all to himself for his performance as the Stasi officer.
