Alcoholic "Shelly" in Second Life: Therapy on a pixel beach
Patient Shelly and psychologist David Stone's avatar: Accelerated Recovery treats alcoholics in a virtual therapy room ...
... as well as in a real office in Atlanta, Georgia.
Accelerated Recovery chief Kelly and his online doppelgänger.
A training simulation of a turbulent flight: As the avatars experience turbulence in the skies ...
... they sit in a vibrating leather chair as they explore the virtual world.
Nutritionist Kelly Hall during a Second Life presentation: In addition to discussion groups and behavior therapy, there are also virtual courses on Identity Island. Patients are taught about special diets that can help remove the toxins from their bodies after quitting alcohol.
The head of Accelerated Recovery stands in front of his virtual office on Second Life ...
... which looks identical to the company's real-world office in Atlanta.
The anonymity of the virtual world has given patients like Shelly more courage to battle their alcoholism.
