Photo Gallery Yulia Tymoshenko Is Back
Yulia Tymoshenko has been one of Ukraine's best-known politicians for decades, and she is once again running in this year's presidential elections. She was on the winning side of the 2014 revolution, but she has not been able to reap the benefits.
President Petro Poroshenko, the incumbent, has not been the reformer many had hoped and has squandered away much of the trust that was placed in him when he was elected with an overwhelming majority in 2014. Here, he is seen in St. Sophia Cathedral after the Ukrainian Orthodox Church established independence from Moscow.
Tymoshenko spent two-and-a-half years in prison following her election defeat in 2010 to Viktor Yanukovych, becoming the most famous political prisoner in the Western world. Yanukovych was ousted from office by the 2014 revolution.
The revolution started as mass protests on Independence Square in the center of Kiev, culminating in a bloodbath on Feb. 20, 2014 when dozens of people were killed by gunfire.
The upshot of the February revolution was that Viktor Yanukovych fled the country for Russia and new presidential elections were held.
