Idea and Vision
For over five decades, DER SPIEGEL has called on the world's best illustrators to produce the cover art for Germany's largest news magazine. This collaboration has produced many extraordinary pieces of art of which 150 will be on display. The illustrations offer an unusual glimpse of the style, history and political history as well as the opportunity to learn more about the work of the illustrators and editors who are responsible for DER SPIEGEL's cover page. The focal point of the exhibition is the artists and their works.

The exhibition of original art works will feature drawings, watercolors, oil paintings, and digital graphics by artists such as Chris F. Payne, Boris Artzybasheff, Braldt Bralds, Tim O'Brien, Rafal Olbinski, and many more. These artists' illustrated covers have earned worldwide recognition, and have gained a permanent place in readers' collective memories as graphical masterpieces. They will be shown for the first time without DER SPIEGEL cover page's hallmark red frame and typography.

Acclaimed international illustrators have been invited to the opening. They will share information about their work and sign limited edition posters of their cover art. The series of exhibitions began in Hamburg and traveled to Berlin, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Munich, Stuttgart, Vienna and Basel before making its final stop at the Museum of American Illustration in New York in December 2005.

DER SPIEGEL is Germany's leading news magazine and the largest in Europe. The magazine is published every Monday and distributed in 172 countries. Week after week, an average of 1.1 million copies are sold.
