The wind can blow undisturbed for hundreds of miles over the Atlantic Ocean, until it reaches the obstacle of St. Helena, a tiny volcanic island lying approximately 1,860 kilometers (1,156 miles) west of Africa in the middle of the sea. Taken from NASA's Terra Satellite, this image shows the wind-blown cloud vortices that form as the air moves around the landmass. The tiny British territory has a population of about 4,000.
