Picture This The Hoff Says Hello
American performer David Hasselhoff delighted German fans on Sunday by visiting the Berlin Wall once again. But instead of advocating for the Wall to get torn down, as he did during a memorable performance of his song "Looking For Freedom" on New Year's Eve 1989, this time "The Hoff" was supporting a movement to save the Wall's longest surviving section.
Plans to move a short section of the East Side Gallery, a symbolic 1.3-kilometer long stretch of the Wall painted with murals from artists around the world, have sparked protests from residents. Hasselhoff joined another demonstration on Sunday, and called the location a "sacred" monument. "It's about people and it's about hearts that were broken, hearts that were torn apart and lives that were lost," he said. "That's what we're talking about today, not a piece of real estate."
Construction on the luxury apartments has been put on hold pending talks between the project developer and the city. "If it goes to the next step, we'll come back with a huge concert and really rock Berlin," Hasselhoff threatened.
