The Dai people, one of China's 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities, celebrate their new year in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, near the southern borders with Burma and Laos. The celebrations include the water-splashing festival, which starts with people carrying buckets of water to temples to bathe statues of Buddha. The festivities last throughout the day as people splash water onto each other to wish happiness and prosperity. Monday marked the beginning of the 1,375th New Year of the Dai calendar.
