Turkish anti-goverment protesters gather as they break their first day of fasting for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Istiklal street, Istanbul's main shopping corridor, on Wednesday. During the month, devout Muslims must abstain from food, drink and sex from dawn until sunset, when they break the fast with the meal known as Iftar. As demonstrators shared a meal, a police water cannon stood watch nearby. The banquet streched some 500 meters (1,640 feet) toward the city's landmark Taksim Square.
