Jan, a two-year-old refugee from Damascus, arrived in the German city of Hanover on Wednesday alongside 107 fellow Syrians. The new arrivals -- mostly women and children, many of whom have suffered torture -- flew to Germany on a chartered flight from the Lebanese city of Beirut. They are the first of some 5,000 Syrians set to arrive in the country in the coming weeks as a result of the civil war. Human rights organizations and opposition politicians criticized the government on Wednesday, stating that the number was still too low. "As the largest country in the European Union, we are obligated to accommodate the largest number of refugees," said Jürgen Tritten, the leader of the Green Party, in an interview with the Rheinische Post.
