Shepherds led a flock of 2,000 sheep through some of Madrid's most upmarket urban settings on Sunday as a part of an annual demonstration to protect ancient grazing and droving rights. Since the 13th century, shepherds have had the right to use droving routes that are now part of the Spanish capital's urban landscape. These rights have been threatened in recent decades by urban sprawl and modern agricultural practices. Each year, shepherds follow the age-old tradition of paying city officials 25 maravedis -- coins minted in the 11th century -- to use the urban crossing.
