As nighttime temperatures in Madrid hit -2 degrees Celsius, an estimated 700 people, most of them Roma, call El Gallinero home. The shanty town, which has neither running water nor an official electric supply, is located 15km from the center of Madrid. Local authorities say it's an illegal settlement. In June, 34 people were left homeless after several of the structures were bulldozed.
